Web, WCF, and Cloud Service Using ASP. NET In Visual Studio

 

A Web service may be
defined as an independent and self-sustained unit of a software application
hosted on the Internet.  Web services implement specific functionalities
to execute the business logic of the commercial application.  Suppose that
you want to host a Web site on the Internet that calculates the simple
interest.  You can use a Web service to host the Web site for calculating
simple interest.  In this scenario, a Web service is advantageous in the
sense that you do not need to write the code in the Web site for calculating
the simple interest.  Instead, all you have to do is simply use the Web
service that provides this functionality.

A Web service allows a
Web site to communicate with other Web sites regardless of the programming
languages ​​in which they are created.  As a Web service complies with
common industry standards, it can be accessed by any Web application,
regardless of the software and hardware platforms on which the application
runs.  The standard to which a Web service must comply is Simple Object
Access Protocol (SOAP) which allows Web services to communicate with other Web
applications over the Internet.  SOAP specifies a format for Extensible
Markup Language (XML) messages, which are used by Web applications to request and
receive a Web service from a Web server.  These messages are also called
SOAP messages.  The other standard is Web Services Description Language
(WSDL), which is an XML-based language that defines Web services.  Every
Web service consists of a corresponding WSDL document that specifies the
location of the Web service and lists all the functions that it can
perform.  

 

Earlier, it was
difficult to create applications that could be used to communicate between a
client and a server.  It was because we needed to use some technologies,
such as ASP.NET Web Service (ASMX Web service), Web Service Enhancements (WSE),
and Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) to perform this task.  Some of the
services provided by these technologies are ASMX Web service that allows sharing
of information in a way that enables it to be accessed from any platform, .NET
Remoting service that allows transferring of data from a client to a server on
the Windows operating system, and MSMQ service that allows queuing of messages
that helps in sending and receiving messages even when the server is
disconnected.

Since different
functionalities are offered by different technologies to develop a distributed
application, a developer has to master each of the aforementioned technologies
Microsoft introduced the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) technology to
overcome the developer’s task of mastering the different technologies. 
WCF brings together the
functionalities of all the aforementioned technologies under a unified
programming model, thereby simplifying the process of developing a distributed
application.  WCF is a set of .NET technologies that act as a platform for
creating and distributing connected applications.  It is also used to
develop and deploy services on Windows and provides a unified framework for
rapidly building service-oriented applications.  With the help of these
applications, it is easy to build and consume secure and reliable applications
through the simplified model WCF. 

 

 

Using a Web Service

 

Let’s learn the usage of
Web service by creating a Web service project by performing the following
steps: 

 

1. Click Start All
Programs Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Visual Studio 2012. The Start Page
appears.

2. Select the File – New
– Web Site option from the menu bar.  The New Web Site dialog box appears.

3. Select the Installed
Templates Visual C # ASP.NET Empty Web Site option in the left pane.

4. Set the location and
enter the name as a Web service application in the Web location combo box to
specify the name and location for the Web application. 

5. Click the OK
button. 

6. Right-click the
application name in the Solution Explorer window and select the Add->Add New
Item option from the context menu.  The Add New Item dialog box appears.

7.  Select the
Installed Visual C# → Web Forms option from the dialog box.

8. Click the Add button
to add the Web Form in the application.

9. Right-click the
application name in the Solution Explorer window and select the Add → Add New
Item option from the context menu, similar to how you have done earlier.
The Add New Item dialog box appears.

10. Select the Installed
Visual C# → Web Service option from the Add New Item dialog box.

Using a WCF Service

 

Creating a WCF service
is easy in Visual Studio 2012 due to its inbuilt support for WCF.  Now,
let’s perform the following steps to create the WCF service using the template
provided in Visual Studio 2012: 

 

 

1. Open Visual Studio
2012. 

 

 2. Select File –
New – > Web Site option from the menu bar.  The New Website the dialog
box appears. 

 

3. Select the Installed
> Templates Visual C # WCF Service option in the left pane. 

 4. Set the
location and enter a name as WCF application in the Web location combo
box. 

5. Click the OK
button. 

 

Cloud Cloud Service

 

The advantage of Cloud
application is that it provides the facility of using the Cloud application
without installing it on the computer.  It reduces the maintenance and
support of the application as compared to those applications that are not
developed using Cloud service.  In ASP.NET 4.5, the Cloud service or
applications are created using the Windows Azure platform.  This platform
provides Windows-based compute and storage service for Cloud
applications.  Different kinds of users can use the application from the
Cloud service, which may be a public or private application.  The Windows
Azure platform helps developers to build highly useful applications for
clients.  Some important features of the Cloud service are as follows:

 

 

  • Accessing and managing
    commercial software. 
  • Centralizing the
    activities of management of software in the Web environment. 
  • Developing applications
    capable of managing many clients.  
  • Centralizing the
    updating feature of software eliminates the need to download the upgrades.

 

There are three types of
deployment models in a Cloud service, which are as follows:

 (i). Community
Cloud:
 Used when many organizations that have common needs and
requirements are ready to share the benefits of the Cloud service.  This
model is quite expensive, but it has several benefits such as privacy and
security.  

 

 

(ii).Hybrid Cloud: Consists of multiple service
providers.  This model integrates various Cloud services for Hybrid Web
hosting. 

 

 

(iii).Private Cloud: Based on the usage of services by a single
client on a private network.The benefits of this model are data security,
corporate governance, and reliability concerns.  The disadvantage of this
model is that the users have to take care of the management of the Cloud
service.  Some of the advantages of Cloud service are as follows:

 

 

  • Cloud service is
    cost-saving.  It helps in the utilization of investment in the corporate
    sector. 
  • The applications that
    are developed using the Cloud service are scalable and robust.  Earlier
    the scaling used to take months, but nowadays the scaling takes less
    time.  
  • The Cloud applications
    are time-saving in terms of deployment and maintenance.
