NEW DELHI: India and the US to launch a 15-day mega military exercise in Alaska Friday to further deepen bilateral military cooperation.
The 17th edition of the exercise “Yudh abhyas“will take place in Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Alaska from October 15 to 29, the Indian army he said Thursday.
The Indian contingent in the exercise will be made up of 350 personnel from an Indian Army infantry battalion group.
The previous edition of the exercise took place in Shooting ranges of Mahajan Field in Bikaner in February.
“This exercise is another step in the growing military cooperation between the two countries. The exercise aims to improve understanding, cooperation and interoperability between two armies,” the Army said.
He said the exercise will focus on “combined arms maneuvers in cold weather conditions and is primarily aimed at sharing tactical-level drills and learning best practices from each other.”
Indo-American defense ties have improved in recent years.
In June 2016, the US had designated India as a “Senior Defense Partner”.
The two countries have also signed key defense and security pacts in recent years, including the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) in 2016 that allows your armies to use each other’s bases to repair and resupply supplies, as well as providing deeper cooperation.
The two parties also signed COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement) in 2018 that provides for interoperability between the two armies and provides for the sale of high-end technology from the US to India.
In October of last year, India and the United States sealed the BECA (Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement) agreement to further boost bilateral defense ties.
The pact provides for the exchange of high-end military technology, logistics and geospatial maps between the two countries.
