Amid evictions, Himanta calls on Muslims to control the population | India News

GUWAHATI: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who completed his first month in office Thursday, appealed to the “Muslim immigrant” state. population adopt “decent family norms”.
“We want to work with the minority Muslim community to control population explosion. Poverty and the invasion of lands are rooted in the population explosion. We can solve various social problems if Muslim immigrants adopt decent family norms … this is my call to them, ”he added.
“With the increase in population, there will be problems of living space, which will lead to clashes. It will be too much expectation of a democratically elected government to allow people to settle in temples and forest lands (sic), ”he said.
Sarma’s remarks come after various Muslim organizations and representatives of the people criticized the government for a series of campaigns across the state to evict invaders from temples and forests.
“No one is our enemy. The government is the guardian of all poor people and we want their development. But we need the support of the community. They (Mulsim immigrants) have to come forward. The protests will not end their poverty. We have to educate Muslim women, work on population control… ”, she said.
“I understand the problem on the other side. The way the population explosion is occurring, they also need living space. Instead of criticizing the government, they should try to practice small family size. The tribals practice it and have never invaded the forest lands, “he added.
