NEW DELHI: It is increasingly common for outside forces to make false accusations of human rights violations against India and this should be vigorously opposed, he said National Human Rights Commission president of justice Arun mishra on Tuesday.
He said that India has emerged as a powerful entity globally and has been recognized as a new power and this is a credit to the people of India, its constitutional system and its leadership. “The failure of rights defenders and social service organizations to unequivocally condemn political violence and terrorism will breed fundamentalism,” Judge Mishra said, addressing the 28th Foundation Day ceremony of the NHRC here.
The NHRC chief also praised the “tireless efforts” of Interior Minister Amit Shah to “usher in a new era” and promote peace in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast.
“The killings of innocent people cannot be glorified. Referring to these terrorists as freedom fighters is wrong. Social service organizations and human rights defenders must join forces to condemn political violence and terrorism. Apathy on this issue breeds fundamentalism and history will never forgive us for this, ”Judge Mishra said, adding that the 20th century has seen nearly 12 million victims of political violence around the world.
“India has the spirit of ‘Sarvadharma Sambhav’ (harmony of religions). Everyone is free to build a temple, a mosque or a church. But in many countries, these freedoms do not exist … ”, he said.
The head of the rights panel also said that the NHRC has been working in India for 28 years, even though many powerful nations still do not have such an institution.
Adding that the press, the media and cyberspace have been given freedom in the country, which is within the obligations of constitutional duties and human responsibilities, Judge Mishra said: “But no one has the freedom to destroy the prestige of the fundamental pillar of the Republic, the judiciary, through derogatory behavior, and no one should have this freedom. ”
