Apple has quietly expanded the repair program for the AirPods Pro two to three years, according to a report by CultofMac. The repair program covers device hardware problems that can cause crackles and static sounds.
With an additional year added to the program, AirPods Pro users will get free replacements if they pass an Apple inspection to be eligible for the repair program. Also, if the problem is with just one of the earbuds, Apple would replace just that one, free of charge. The repair program is only designed for AirPods Pro and not AirPods or AirPods Max.
According to Apple, the crackling sounds issue has only affected AirPods Pro units that were manufactured before October 2020. Issues that may arise with AirPods Pro could include (one or more)
Crackling or static sounds that increase in noisy environments, with exercise or when talking on the phone
Active Noise Cancellation does not work as expected, such as a loss of bass or increased background sounds, such as noise from the street or airplane ”
If you’ve experienced any of the aforementioned issues with AirPods, you can contact Apple and get your faulty units returned.
If you opt for a do-it-yourself repair, whereby you can take the unit to an Apple Store or a Apple Authorized Service ProviderPlease make sure you have the proof of purchase or the original AirPods box and charging case along with your original AirPods. You would also need the product’s serial number, which can be found on the charging case or on the bottom of the lid.
