Pick up at the box office day 1

Bastar has only managed to ensure $50 lakh on Friday at the domestic box office. This is just a small fraction of the astonishing first-day total that his previous film, The Kerala Story, achieved at the box office last year. That film, also directed by Sudipto and produced by Vipul, obtained $8 crores on the day of its inauguration. It then continued to steadily rise at the box office, culminating in an impressive lifetime total of $242 crores in India.

Competition with Yodha

Bastar: The Naxal Story faces stiff competition from a much bigger film, Yodha, a kidnapping action thriller starring Sidharth Malhotra, Disha Patani and Raashii Khanna. That film, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and directed by debutant duo Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha, got $4.26 crores at the box office on Friday, more than eight times the opening day take of Bastar.

About Bastar

Based on the Naxal insurgency in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district, the film explores the sufferings of the common people of the region without going into the political side of the issue. Adah plays the role of an IPS officer in the film.

After the controversy surrounding The history of Kerala Vipul clarified earlier this week that Bastar: The Naxal Story is not political. “We didn't want to get into politics. We want to explore human tragedy. All politics is on one side and the real people affected are the common people. When will their pain come out in front of people? Normally we insult politicians and walk away “The problem is the problem, but this true human tragedy must come to light,” he said.
