NEW DELHI: Coal India Ltd, the world’s largest miner, has temporarily stopped supplying users without power, a company official said, as India struggles with one of its worst power supply shortfalls in years.
“It is a temporary prioritization of supplies to power plants until stocks stabilize,” said the source, familiar with Coal India’s plan.
There were no immediate official comments from the company.
There have been concerns that the limited availability of coal could lead to power shortages. The Center has been monitoring the situation.
On Wednesday, Union Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi he had emphasized that the supply to thermal power plants had been increased.
In a tweet, the Minister had said that cumulative supplies of coal, including that of Coal India Ltd has registered more than 2 million tonnes on Wednesday. Joshi It has also stated that the shipment of coal to power plants will be further increased to ensure a sufficient stock of power plants.
