Defence minister conducts final breakthrough blast of Sela tunnel in Arunachal | India News

NEW DELHI: Defending Minister Rajnath singh It made virtually the last explosion of the Sela tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh and marked a 20,000-kilometer-long BRO motorcycle expedition on Thursday.
The virtual advance blast and signaling were carried out by the minister at the National War Memorial.
Singh said that the Sela Tunnel will be the world’s largest two-lane tunnel at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet. He also praised the work done by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) while managing this project.
The tunnel will not only strengthen national security, but will also increase transportation facilities for the local population and consequently improve their socio-economic conditions, he said.
“This tunnel, which has been built with state-of-the-art features, will prove to be the lifeline not only for Tawangbut the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh, “Singh said.
The tunnel goes through Sela Pass and it is expected to reduce the distance to the Chinese border through Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district by 10 km. Construction of the tunnel is expected to be completed in June 2022.
“The great explosion of the main tunnel of Sela shows their hard work (BRO) and their commitment to the security and socio-economic development of the country,” said the defense minister.
He also pointed to a BRO motorcycle expedition.
Singh said 75 BRO and Army personnel will participate in the motorcycle expedition that will travel a distance of 20,000 km through many states and Union territories.
The Sela tunnel would reduce the travel time between the 4th Army Corps headquarters in Tezpur in Assam and Tawang by at least one hour.
In addition, it would ensure that National Highway 13, especially the 171 km stretch between Bomdila and Tawang, remains accessible in all weather conditions.
In the 2018-19 budget, the former Minister of Finance of the Union Arun jaitley had announced the Center’s plan to build a tunnel through the Sela Pass, located at an elevation of 13,700 feet, that will ensure faster movement of troops in Tawang, a district strategically located on the border with China.
