Doing everything possible to comply with the new digital rules: Twitter for the government


NEW DELHI: Twitter India On Wednesday, it told the Center that it is doing everything it can to comply with the new digital rules that went into effect last month.
“We want to reiterate that Twitter is doing its best to comply with the new guidelines. Twitter has been, and continues to be, committed to serving the people of India by providing a platform to serve the public conversation in India, especially during critical moments and emergency situations such as those we have seen globally in recent months, “the microblogging platform said in a statement.
The statement comes amid a protracted dispute between the Center and the US giant over compliance with the new digital rules. The government had asked Twitter to comply with the laws of the country.
Twitter said the guidelines were notified on February 25 and that the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic made it more difficult to comply with the guidelines, which includes hiring a resident complaints officer to deal with complaints related to the tweets on your platform.
“Like other major social media intermediaries (SSMls) operating in India, to fulfill the underlying intent of the Guidelines, we have appointed a Nodal Contact Person (NCP) and a Resident Complaint Officer (AGO) on a contractual basis while we recruit to fill the positions on a permanent basis, “he said.
It said it is in the advanced stages of finalizing the appointment of a chief compliance officer.
“We plan to provide you with additional details in the next few days, and within a week at the latest,” Twitter told the government.
The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had said it had given Twitter one final notice to comply with new rules regarding social media companies.
New IT rules for social media companies that went into effect last month require big platforms like Facebook and Twitter to do more due diligence and make these digital platforms more accountable for the content hosted on them.
The rules also require significant social media intermediaries, who provide services primarily in the nature of messaging, to allow the identification of the “first originator” of information that undermines India’s sovereignty, state security or public order.
Under the rules, major social media intermediaries, those with more than 50 lakh users, must appoint a complaints officer, a node officer, and a chief compliance officer. These personnel must be resident in India.
In addition, social media companies will have to remove flagged content within 36 hours and remove content flagged for issues such as nudity and pornography within 24 hours.
