NEW DELHI: Following media reports that Hindu temples and Durga Puja Places were vandalized by unidentified Muslim fanatics in Bangladesh, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) noted on Thursday that the neighboring country’s government reacted quickly to ensure the situation was under control and said the Indian mission is in close contact with Bangladesh authorities on the matter.
Some Hindu temples in the neighboring country were vandalized by unidentified Muslim fanatics during Durga Puja celebrations, prompting the government to deploy paramilitary forces personnel to 22 districts after four people were killed and many others injured in riots, according to Bangladeshi media reports.
Asked about the reported attacks on the pandalos of Durga Puja and temples in Bangladesh, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam bagchi He said: “We have seen some disturbing reports of adverse incidents involving attacks on religious gatherings in Bangladesh. We note that the Bangladeshi government has reacted quickly to ensure control of the situation, including the deployment of law enforcement machinery.”
“We also understand that the ongoing Durga Puja holiday celebrations continue in Bangladesh with the support of government agencies and, of course, a large majority of the public,” he told a press conference here.
The Indian high commission in Dhaka, as well as consulates in Bangladesh, are in close contact with authorities in Dhaka and locally on the matter, Bagchi said.
A spokesman for the Bangladeshi Interior Ministry said Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) troops have been deployed to 22 districts across the country to stop the spread of violence.
According to media reports, three people were killed during clashes between Muslim fanatics and police in the Hajiganj sub-district of Chandpur, on the Cumilla border, on Wednesday, while the fourth victim succumbed to his injuries later.
