LONDON: England fast bowler Chris Jordan says his teammates are considering taking the knee before the start of your World Cup T20 opener against the West Indies, who have confirmed to repeat the anti racism gesture on October 23.
The last time England’s players got down on their knees was in August 2020 when they faced Ireland in an ODI and their decision to stop was criticized by the great West Indies anti-racist activist Michael Holding.
However, England players did wear jerseys with sports messages against any act of racism, religious intolerance, sexism and other anti-discrimination slogans during the test series against New Zealand.
Jordan says they are considering kneeling at the biggest event this month.
“We will discuss it and if people think strongly about it, we will definitely do it. On the other hand, if we don’t, then we won’t,” Jordan was quoted as saying by ‘The Telegraph’.
West Indies T20 skipper Kieron Pollard confirmed his plans to kneel in every match, starting with the first match of the tournament against England.
“From what I know at this point, I think it’s something that we’re going to continue because it’s something we strongly believe in, as a team,” Pollard said.
“Hopefully, we can continue to show our support for something that I think is close to our hearts.”
The kneeling gesture emerged after the death of African American George Floyd at the hands of a Minnesota police officer in May 2020.Black lives are important‘protests around the world.
“Everyone has their own opinions on racism and Black Lives Matter and all these things,” Pollard said.
“So I can’t tell you what to do or expect anything because sometimes when you expect things from people, you tend to be disappointed,” he said, when asked if he expected England to repeat the gesture.
“Sometimes you just have to look at the man in the mirror and if we think it is something that is very very important to us, we will do it. And if the opposition thinks that too, it is up to them if they don’t.” t. ”
