fernandes: Congress veteran and former Union minister Oscar Fernandes passes away | India News


MANGALURU: Old union minister and member of Rajya Sabha Oscar Fernandes died in a private hospital on Mangaluru on Tuesday. He was 80 years old.
Fernandes had suffered injuries after suffering an accidental fall while doing his regular exercise and was admitted to the Yenepoya Hospital in the city on July 19.
Veteran Congress The leader had lost his balance while doing wall push-ups and hitting the wall. It was discovered that he had a clot in his brain after he went to the hospital, where he underwent dialysis. He had informed the doctor that he had frequent headaches after the fall. Medical tests revealed a clot in his brain, sources close to his family said.
Fernandes was minister of the Union of Transport, Roads and Highways and Labor and Employment in the UPA government. A highly respected politician, Fernandes shared proximity with the main leaders of Congress, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Fernandes, who became a minister for the first time in the UPA-II government, has held many key positions in the Manmohan Singh government and also in the party. Being the Secretary General of the AICC in the UPA government was also a great leap in his career.
Fernandes, born on March 27, 1941 in the district of Udupi, is one of 12 children of his parents Roque Fernandes and Leonissa M Fernandes. Married to Blossom Fernandes, he has two children, a son and a daughter. He studied at Cecilia’s Convent, MGM College in Udupi and graduated in arts.
