FM woos US investors, cites steps taken by govt


NEW DELHI: Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman I met several American investors and they proposed investments in all sectors, from the pharmaceutical industry to finance and telecommunications, citing recent initiatives taken by the government.
Sitharaman, who is in the US to attend the annual meetings of the World Bank and the IMF, met with Advent International managing partner, private equity investor, David Mussafer. “Opportunities to direct foreign collaborations and attract investment in sectors such as financial services, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, technology were discussed. AIC already has a presence in India and is further committed to expanding its business plan in India, ”the Finance Ministry said in a post on Twitter.
The FM also met with Bain Capital Co-Managing Partner John Connaughton and Co-Chairman Steve Pagliuca and highlighted the investment possibilities in GIFT City, as well as in infrastructure.
He also had a conversation with American Tower Company with the company’s executive vice president, Edmund DiSanto, and said that recent government moves have shown a “new receptivity” and position India in a favorable light for the global investment community. “We are 76,000 towers at the moment in our entire cellular network (in India) and we believe that we will go 4,000 more,” he added.
Similarly, ExxonMobil said it is “interested in playing an active role in increasing the share of natural gas in India’s overall energy mix,” the ministry said.
