Fragile X Society-India is excited to be a part of this incredible initiative that brings together Fragile X families and communities around the world.
The Taj Mahal Tower, Mumbai has been a solid support for many years and will be illuminated again this year to support awareness. In addition, this year we have gained support from 21 more buildings, including shopping malls, clubs and high-rise towers across India.
These include Downtown Salt Lake and City Center New Town in Kolkata, the Woodrose Club, Augusta Club and MLR convention center in Banglore, Fortune Pandiyan Hotel in Madurai, Ahmedabad One Mall, Rameswaram Daiwik Hotel, Devi Ratn Taj Jaipur, Blue Diamond in Pune and Planet Godrej residential towers in Mumbai.
Fragile X Society-India has been a support system for families affected by the condition and also strives to raise awareness about it. This year we have held numerous webinars to empower medical students about the disease. “Fragile X awareness is the first and biggest step towards diagnosis, treatments and cure,” says Shalini Kedia, President of Fragile X Society-India, who can be reached with @fragilexindia on Instagram and Facebook.
“Personally, I am very moved by the gesture of a father who has two small restaurants on the road to Jaipur and will also turn on to support the conscience in search of a cure.”
As the single most common inherited genetic cause of autism, the fragile X is the best key we have to solving autism. Fragile X treatments are also likely to help people with Alzheimer’s or other brain disorders. Since it causes intellectual disability and is quietly passed from generation to generation, it is imperative to raise awareness about it.
According to world statistics, one in every 5,000 children is affected by Fragile X syndrome and that makes it close to 4,00,000 people in India alone. This is a crucial number and needs attention.
