BAREILLY: The Special investigation team (SIT) probing the Lakhimpur Kheri violence is confident that it has found evidence that the main murder accused Ashish Mishra’s friend Ankit das He was in one of the convoy’s cars and subsequently fled, sources told TOI. Four farmers and a journalist were among the eight who died that day.
The SIT took Union Minister Ajay mishrason Ashish, Ankit and two members of the convoy – Shekhar Bharti and Lateef – to Kheri on Thursday to recreate the crime scene, with forensic experts from Lucknow examining the site. Vehicles like those from the minister’s convoy were brought in that day and mannequins were set up to represent protesting farmers. The media was not allowed. Ashish stayed in the police all terrain while the other three were asked to leave.
After visiting the scene of the violence, the defendants were taken to a camp in Banbirpur where a wrestling match had been organized on 3 October, the day of the violence. However, SIT sources had told TOI that they had not been able to explain where he was between 2.36 pm and 4 pm The incident took place around 3 pm
Ashish’s three-day pretrial detention ends on Friday and the other three on Sunday. Ashish was returned to judicial custody on Thursday night, nearly 12 hours before his pretrial detention ended.
“The SIT has found evidence that Ankit Das was in the black Fortuner while Lateef (his gorilla) had allegedly opened fire while trying to help Das and others escape after shooting down the farmers,” said an SIT source. “The name of a Nandan has also come up.”
