Kheri violence condemnable, but it’s not isolated case: Sitharaman | India News

BOSTON: Lakhimpur Kheri’s violence, in which four farmers were killed, is “absolutely reprehensible,” Finance Minister Nirmala said. Sitharaman has said, stressing that there are problems of this nature occurring in other parts of India as well that should be raised “when they happen and not when it suits others” because there is a BJP government in Uttar Pradesh.
Sitharaman, who is on an official visit to the United States, was answering a question during a conversation at Harvard Kennedy School on Tuesday about the murder of four farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri and the arrest of Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay mishra.
He was asked why there is no news on this from the prime minister, senior ministers and why there is a “defensive reaction” when someone asks questions about such things.
“No, absolutely not… It’s nice of you to have caught that incident that is absolutely reprehensible, we all say that. Likewise, there are cases that happen in other places, it is my concern.
“India has problems of this nature that occur in many different parts of the country alike. I would like you, and many others who know India to bring it up every time it happens, not just bring it up when it suits us because it is a state where BJP is in power, one of my cabinet colleague’s sons probably is in trouble, and also assume that it is actually they who did it and no one else. The due course of justice will also have a full investigative process to establish it, ”he said.
“And it is not being defensive about my party or my prime minister. It is being on the defensive with India. I will speak for India, I will speak for justice for the poor. They won’t make fun of me. And if it’s a joke, I’ll be on the defensive to stand up and say ‘Sorry, let’s talk the facts.’ That is my answer to you, ”he said.
