NEW DELHI: After Mehul ChoksiThe alleged girlfriend appeared on news channels and debunked her ‘kidnapping’ claim, it was the turn of two British Indians who came forward to refute the abduction theory spread by the fugitive diamantaire who is wanted in India for Rs 13,500 crore National Bank of Punjab swindle.
The two British residents of Indian origin told the Caribbean outlet Writeups24 on Wednesday that they had never met or seen Choksi or were connected to his alleged girlfriend Barbara Jarabica.
The news portal quoted Gurjit Bhandal as saying that he was a resident of the Midlands, UK, and that he had come to Antigua with his friend. Gurmit singh on May 23 and sailed the same day to reach Dominica at night. He said his customs clearance certificate was proof of his departure time. He said they had booked the yacht online prior to his arrival.
The captain of the yacht ‘Calliope of Arne’ had made a similar statement two days ago, refuting claims made by Choksi’s lawyers that he was kidnapped and taken by ‘Calliope of Arne’ to Dominica. Another media outlet claimed that Choksi was declared a “prohibited person” by the Dominican Ministry of National Security.
A letter dated May 25, addressed to Choksi and signed by Homeland Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore, said that Choksi was declared a prohibited immigrant. “He is not allowed to enter Dominica and the police chief has been instructed to take all necessary steps for his repatriation,” the letter said.
Writeups24 had previously quoted an aide to Choksi, Govin, as saying that he had heard from the diamantaire about the latter’s plan to go to Cuba, where he allegedly owned a safe house. Govin, according to the site, claimed that Choksi had citizenship of another Caribbean country.
ED can accuse Choksi’s wife
ED may include the name of Mehul Choksi’s wife, Priti Choksi, on its supplemental charge sheet in the PNB scam, Vijay V Singh reports. ED has been investigating Priti since last year and had summoned her twice, but she did not appear. The source said that Priti was the beneficial owner of Hillingdon Holdings, incorporated in the Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai and was the sole shareholder of Goldhawk DMCC. Several Choksi firms, including DMCC, were created for Choksi’s benefit, the sources said.
