New rules discourage the use of masks in children under 5 years of age | India News

NEW DELHI: New guidelines for the management of Covid-19 infection in children discourages use of masks in children, particularly 5 years and younger, in what appears to be an assessment that the risk of infection is small, as well as concerns that the masks may present safety concerns.
Children ages 6 to 11 may wear a mask based on the child’s ability to use it safely and appropriately under the direct supervision of parents or guardians, the guidelines say.
However, children over 12 years old should wear a mask just like adults. Although the drug remdesivir has not been recommended for the treatment of Covid-19 in children, the rational use of high-resolution CT (HRCT) Imaging has been suggested to monitor the effect of the disease on the lungs. The guidelines also advise against the use of steroids in mild, asymptomatic cases, as they can be harmful and lead to other serious problems. The use of steroids has been recommended only in moderately severe and critically ill hospitalized cases under strict supervision. “Steroids must be used at the right time, in the right dose, and for the right time. Self-medication of steroids should be avoided, ”he said.
