NEW DELHI: Big drama unfolded in Rajya Sabha on Thursday afternoon when Trinamool Congress Deputy Shantanu Sen snatched documents from IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw just as the minister stood up to make a statement about the Pegasus snooping line, triggering a heated exchange of words with BJP banks.
Sen tore up the papers and threw them at Vice President Harivansh. Vaishnaw was unable to complete his statement and the home had to be postponed for the day. Immediately afterwards, there was a lively exchange between Union Minister Hardeep Puri and the TMC MP and bailiffs had to intervene to control the situation. Just before this great drama, as soon as Vaishnaw rose to speak on the subject of the alleged wiretapping, the opposition MPs rushed to the well of the House and raised slogans of “jasoosi band karo (stop spying)” against government.
The minister dismissed the charges and the reports, saying: “When we look at this issue through the prism of logic, it clearly emerges that there is no substance behind this sensationalism.” Harivansh urged protesting MPs to desist from non-parliamentary behavior and return to their respective seats and let the minister complete his statement.
We should not follow this non-parliamentary behavior. The report that everyone wanted and that was an important issue for all of you was presented. You have the opportunity to ask your questions and get the answers. But you don’t want a discussion on a topic. How is this democratic process? Harivansh asked.
Hours earlier, the House was postponed twice after opposition MPs raised the Pegasus issue and TI searches at the offices of the Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar. Addressing TMC, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the incident was “disgraceful”. “The rampant vandalism of @AITCofficial that has claimed hundreds of lives in West Bengal is now shown in Parliament against an Ashwini Vaishnaw minister. Embarrassing, ”he tweeted. “Shameless behavior encouraged by Mamata Banerjee who believes that the laws of the land do not apply to her or her party,” added Chandrasekhar. BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said that the TMC and Congress said “they will do things to damage the reputation of the country.
