MARGAO: Minister of the Interior of the Union, Amit Cha on Thursday he said the Center intends to make forensic investigation mandatory for all criminal offenses that are liable to six years in prison.
Addressing a meeting after conducting the National University of Forensic Sciences bhoomi-puja in Dharbandora, Shah said the lack of trained forensic science experts was causing an increase in the handling of criminal cases in court.
To ensure that forensic investigation is mandatory for such crimes, Shah said it was necessary to establish forensic laboratories in more than 600 districts and provide a mobile forensic van at the level of each police subdivision.
As this requires the availability of at least 40,000 forensic scientists, Shah said the National University of Forensic Sciences was established to provide education in various disciplines of forensic science to students that would provide them with a safe location.
Shah urged Goa CM Pramod Sawant to popularize forensic science among school students. “Just as a large number of sailors come from Goa, may Goa also produce a large number of forensic scientists over the next 10 years,” he said.
Shah said that in addition to providing forensic education to students, the forensic university will also provide diplomas for police officers, judicial officials, cybersecurity related individuals and security personnel from private companies.
He also asked the university authorities to develop courses related to tourist security, coastal surveillance, drug and narcotics control, among others, in the interest of Goa’s tourism sector. He said that he would also effectively control the law and order situation.
Shah said the forensic university was first conceived by the prime minister Narendra modi when it was the CM of Gujarat. “Modi worked to start the world’s first forensic field university and when he became prime minister, he established the National University of Forensic Sciences,” he said.
