NEW DELHI: Rejection of the SIT and the commission of inquiry established by the government of Uttar Pradesh to investigate the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, the SKM on Friday he said he will convene a ‘nationwide’roko lane‘protest on October 18 if their demands are not met.
The Samyukt Kisan morcha has been demanding that the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Household Ajay Mishra be fired and that his son Ashish Mishra be arrested in connection with the October 3 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Eight people died in the incident. Of these, four were farmers, who were allegedly hit by vehicles driven by BJP workers who were traveling to welcome Uttar Pradesh Chief Deputy Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to an event in the area.
Ashish Mishra has been named to an FIR following allegations that he was in one of the vehicles that hit the four farmers.
In a statement, the SKM said that if its demands are not met by October 11, it will call a national ‘rail roko’ protest on October 18.
The SKM said it rejects both the SIT and the Commission of Inquiry established by the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate the Lakhimpur Kheri incident. He demanded an impartial investigation into the matter that will be monitored directly by the Supreme Court.
The SKM also welcomes the SC’s order asking the Uttar Pradesh police to keep all evidence in the case intact, according to the statement.
UP Police issued a new notice to Ashish Mishra asking him to appear before him at 11 a.m. Saturday after he failed to comply with Friday’s summons.
Ajay Mishra, who confronted reporters at Lucknow airport, said his son could not appear before the police because he was unwell, but that he will record his statement on Saturday.
In addition to the four farmers, two BJP workers, an Ajay Mishra driver and Raman Kashyap, a journalist working for a private television channel, were killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
