Swachh 2.0 & Amrut 2.0 get Rs 4 lakh crore | India News

NEW DELHI: Government approved financial disbursement of more than Rs 4 lakh on Tuesday crore for two major programs for urban areas to make cities cleaner, litter-free and provide 100% access to clean water in the next five years. Prime Minister Narendra modi launched both programs, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 and AMRUT 2.0, on October 1.
One of the main thrusts of SBM (U) 2.0 will be the remediation of all legacy landfills to release 14,000 acres of closed land that lie beneath 15 million tons of legacy waste.
According to an official statement, SMB 2.0 will focus on the sustainability of open defecation (ODF), achieve scientific solid waste processing and wastewater management in cities with less than one lakh population. He said Cabinet has approved the financial disbursement of approximately Rs 1.42 lakh crore, which is 2.5 times more than the disbursement made for the first phase of the mission. Central’s share of the plan will be just Rs 36,465 million.
The AMRUT 2.0 outlay is Rs 2.77 lakh crore, which aims to make cities ‘water safe’ and ‘self sustainable’ through the circular water economy. To obtain reliable and affordable water supply and sanitation services, the plan envisages providing functional tap connections to all households. It will also include conservation / augmentation of water sources, rejuvenation of water bodies and wells, recycling / reuse of used treated water, and collection of rainwater.
