The government buys a record 418.47 lakh tonnes of wheat at MSP for Rs 82,648 crore this year |  India News


NEW DELHI: The Center on Wednesday it said it has acquired a record 418.47 lakh tonnes of wheat so far in the current marketing season that started in April, which cost the Treasury Rs 82,648 crore.
The record purchase of wheat has been achieved amid protests by farmers on the Delhi borders since late November 2020. Farmers’ unions are demanding the repeal of three new farm laws and a legal guarantee of the Support minimum price (MSP).
Rabi’s (RMS) 2021-22 marketing season runs from April to March, but most acquisitions are completed in June.
“Ongoing RMS 2021-22 wheat acquisition continues smoothly in the acquisition states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir in MSP, as was done in previous seasons, “an official statement said.
As of June 8, the government has purchased 418.47 lakh tonnes of wheat compared to 373.22 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.
“Around 46 lakh farmers have already benefited from ongoing RMS acquisition operations with an MSP value of Rs 82,648.38 crore,” the statement said.
This year’s acquisitions have surpassed the previous high of 389.92 lakht reached in the full 2020-21 marketing year.
State owned Indian Food Corporation (FCI) is the nodal agency for the acquisition and distribution of food grains.
Under the National Food Safety Act (NFSA), the Center provides 5 kg of wheat and rice per person per month to around 80 million people at a highly subsidized rate of Rs 2-3 per kg.
