What is the Delhi Jal Board case in which Arvind Kejriwal was issued a fresh summons?

AAP leader Atishi said that the DJB case is a back-up plan to arrest Arvind Kejriwal.

New Delhi:

Amid the legal tussle between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over multiple summons in the Delhi liquor policy case, the central agency has now asked the ED leader AAP to appear for questioning in another case. Kejriwal has been summoned in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi Jal Board.

What is Delhi Jal Board?

Created in 1998, the Delhi Jal Board is responsible for distributing drinking water across the national capital. Also called DJB, the board treats water from sources such as the Yamuna River and the Bhakra Dam and canals near Delhi. It is also responsible for collecting and disposing of sewage from areas under the New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Cantonment.

What is the case?

The ED case is based on an FIR registered by CBI. It alleged that former DJB chief engineer Jagdish Kumar Arora had awarded a contract of Rs 38 crore to NKG Infrastructure Limited. This contract was for the supply, installation and testing of electromagnetic flow meters. The FIR alleges that DJB and NBCC officials illegally favored NKG Infrastructure in exchange for bribe. The ED arrested Mr. Arora and a contractor, Anil Kumar Aggarwal, on January 31. It is alleged that NKG Infrastructure got the tender on the basis of forged documents and that Mr. Arora was aware of the fact that the company did not meet the technical requirements. eligibility.

What is AAP link?

The ED, which is probing the money trail in the case, has alleged that Arora received a bribe in cash and bank accounts after the contract went to NKG Infrastructure. This money, he claimed, was given to different parties, including “people related to the AAP”. “The bribe sums were also transferred to the AAP as election funds,” read a statement from the ED. This is the second case where the central agency has accused the AAP of taking bribes. In the other case in which Kejriwal was summoned, the ED alleged that the AAP used bribes from Delhi's now scrapped liquor excise policy for its election campaign in Goa.

How has the AAP responded?

AAP leader and Delhi minister Atishi has said that “no one knows what this DJB case is about”. “This appears to be a back-up plan to arrest (Arvind) Kejriwal anyway and stop him from campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections,” he told the media. The Delhi Chief Minister asked to appear before the agency on Monday for questioning in the DJB case.
