When will we have a vaccine ready for children? What companies are working on it?

Currently children in select countries around the world including the US, Singapore, Japan, Dubai, Israel and parts of Europe can be vaccinated against COVID-19 (children over 12 years old), clinical trials started alone in late 2020, with companies like Pfizer-BionTech, Moderna, and Sinopharm testing vaccine doses in younger children, allowing them to proceed with emergency use authorization.

Meanwhile, China has now allowed one of its domestic vaccine manufacturers, Sinopharm, to administer the vaccine to children as young as 3 years old.

In India currently only one vaccine developer, Bharat Biotech, has started testing in children. Zydus Cadila, who is also expected to seek clearance for its adult vaccine, will also be another to develop a vaccine for children. Apart from this, Pfizer is also said to have held talks with Indian officials to bring their manufactured vaccine to India, which may also be available to children. Similar conversations have also been said to take place with Moderna Inc.

However, it is still suspected that even with promising vaccine trials, a COVID-19 vaccine for children in the country may not be available for administration before the end of 2021.

A slower rate of adult vaccination, late clinical trials, and availability of doses can also lead to further delays.
