WTC Final: If India Play Four Closures, Shardul Thakur Is My Choice, Says Former Head Coach Sarandeep Singh | Cricket news

NEW DELHI: India should watch Shardul Thakur on Mohammad Siraj as the fourth fast bowling option on the side for the World Trials Championship Final against New Zealand in the event of cloudy conditions at Southampton, sits former coach Sarandeep Singh.
Sarandeep, whose tenure ended with the Australian tour earlier this year, has chosen Shardul over Siraj because of his hitting ability, which showed very well in Australia.
As it stands, India is likely to enter with three pacemakers and the spin duo of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the definitive start on June 18.

“If the conditions are cloudy then you can play an extra fast pitcher after Ishant Sharma, Jasprit bumrah and Mohammad Shami. My pick would be Shardul, although Siraj has done very well too, “Sarandeep told PTI.
“You will need batting options in the lowest order and Shardul gives you that. The ball will work a bit in Southampton and Shardul is good at swinging the ball. He has years of experience in domestic cricket and has a very sharp mind in cricket.
“If a fourth pacemaker is chosen, Jadeja will unfortunately have to be left out. Ashwin should play as there are quite a few lefties on the New Zealand side.”
The batting unit looks pretty settled, but Sarandeep said it will be an important series for young starter Shubman Gill, who was unable to replicate his success in Australia in the home series against England.

“Shubman’s a class act. I’m sure he would do well and will probably start with the WTC Final with Rohit. He didn’t have the best times against England at home, I hope he finds a way to recover in his own backyard.
“There is tremendous competition for the opening spot with Mayank sitting even though they have done well in their short test run thus far. Then you have the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal waiting in line,” Sarandeep said.
Speaking about the new faces chosen on the second ropes team for the Sri Lanka tour in July, Sarandeep said it was surprising to see Shivam Dube not making the cut as a backup for Hardik Pandya.
“What happens in case Hardik can’t bowl? You needed a backup on Dube or Vijay Shankar. You’ve picked six spinners and none of them will be able to play, so it made sense to add another fast bowling all-rounder.” . “he added.
